XX can't read. Or rather, he only recognizes a few characters. But he's a bookstore clerk, which is hard to believe, considering his apparent age and the way he speaks in a jumble.
So you can understand why the manager thought he wouldn't make a good bookstore clerk.
But they couldn't find anyone else, and Yokohama had plenty of eccentrics already, so one more wouldn't make a difference. XX was hired.
Fortunately, since he started working, the manager hadn't received a single complaint about him.
Maybe an illiterate person could still make a good bookstore clerk, the manager thought with relief. And XX even managed to sell off some of the older staff's long-standing stock.
That was a good thing.
Red-haired customer: I'm looking for a book about child psychology. Any recommendations?
XX pondered. XX frowned. XX had an epiphany. He pulled out two books with the word "child" in the title, took a bite out of them, nodded with satisfaction, and handed them to the customer.
The red-haired customer looked down at the books, now marked with teeth: What New Parents Need to Know: Choosing Clothes for Children of Every Age, and What New Parents Need to Know: Making Weaning Food Children Can Actually Eat.
The customer hesitated. "Are these right?"
XX tilted his head. Were they not? They seemed right to him.
Well, all right, the customer thought, silently taking out his money.
Overworked office drone, up all night: Sorry, I came to the wrong place.
The decor made him think it was a cafe. He really shouldn't have gone to work today.
XX grabbed him and launched into a sales pitch.
The office drone looked down at the books: How to Get Rid of Your Boss, My Years as a Double Agent, and How I Became the Boss While Undercover and the Organization Still Hasn't Called Me Back.
Office drone: "...I'll take them."
XX: "!" Overjoyed, with little flowers popping out.jpg
The bandaged weirdo sneaked into the shop on a friend's recommendation, only to be apprehended by the righteous clerk and subjected to a sales pitch.
One Hundred Ways to Fail at Cooking Mushrooms
Bandaged weirdo: "Huh? No thanks."
XX: "!" For the first time, he'd been rejected!
Fighting spirit: up, up!
Sales pitch: How to Develop Leadership Skills
"Not interested~"
Undeterred: On Lonely Nights, Who Do I Think About?
"Ugh, gross~" He even rubbed at the bandages on his body.
XX's hand moved so fast it left afterimages, while the bandaged weirdo's refusals followed as close as a shadow.
The two of them were panting.
At last, XX took the bandaged customer's hand and placed his own face in the man's palm.
Bandaged customer: "???" This is so embarrassing... Well, in that case... I'll take it!
XX nodded in satisfaction.
No customer leaves this bookstore empty-handed. No one! (Read that again.jpg)
