The Chinese instinct to rescue women from brothels is impossible to shake.
Zhong Yan had grown up to be a well-behaved young master, and he was nineteen by now.
The one time he ever did anything outrageously bold, he took a backpack full of cash and confidently slipped in through the back door of a bar.
Meeting the man's rare look of astonishment, Zhong Yan gathered his courage, opened the backpack, and held it out to him with both hands.
"Big brother, you don't have to do this anymore. Let me take care of you."

The two of them really did settle into a happy life together.
The man shared a small apartment with him and cooked for him in an apron. After dinner, they would hold hands and go for a walk, and on weekends, they would curl up on the sofa and watch a movie together.
But Zhong Yan knew all too well that supporting a "retired male model" wasn't that simple. He had to earn more money and give the man a more luxurious life.
So Zhong Yan braced himself and went to banquets to socialize, all to ask for more funding for his lab and earn a little extra money.
But could someone please explain why the man surrounded by people at the banquet, impeccably dressed in a suit and radiating authority, looked exactly like the husband who was supposed to be at home making soup for him?
Zhong Yan heard people call him "President He."
He knew that name. Nanzhou had a thriving shipping industry, and the He family's shipping business held an 80 percent monopoly. It was no exaggeration to say that most of Nanzhou's entrepreneurs had to live at President He's mercy.
There was no way this man could be the gentle, devoted husband at home who washed his hands and cooked for him.
And just fifteen minutes ago, the man had texted him:
"Baby, don't drink too much at your dinner after work. Want me to come pick you up?"
Zhong Yan stood silently in the corner for a long time. Then he set down his glass of red wine and turned to leave.

He Chi took over the family business as soon as he came of age.
In the early years, there had been fierce power struggles and bloodshed.
It took him decades to secure his position as head of the family. He kindly sent a few of his uncles off to retire in Africa.
From then on, He Chi held all the power and wealth in his hands.
But after turning thirty, he began to find that kind of life unbearably dull.
It was as if there was nothing left that could attract him.
Until he met Zhong Yan at a friend's bar.
The kid had mistaken him for a male model. After coming to see him for several days, he announced that he would "buy him out" and take him away.
How interesting.
He Chi hadn't come across anything this interesting in a long time.
Looking down at those bright black eyes, He Chi found the situation amusing in a mean-spirited way, even as other thoughts began to stir in him.
He agreed.
As if joining in some elaborate game of house, He Chi followed him home.
He'd never lived in such a small apartment in his life, let alone put on an apron and cooked, but He Chi made the most of their little life together.
Until one day, his real identity was exposed.
And then.
His wife left him.
Bonus Scene
Zhong Yan had always thought He Chi was a gentle man who almost never got angry. He was rather glad he could support He Chi, so he didn't have to go out to work. Otherwise, who knew how badly people might bully him?
That was until he asked He Chi to break up.
He cut off all contact with He Chi on his own, and even feared he might cave in, so he decided to leave Nanzhou altogether.
He asked a friend for help. Afraid to use his ID, he planned to sneak out of Nanzhou on a ferry.
But that night, the ferry was stopped. Shouts and commotion erupted outside, again and again, until at last everything fell silent as the grave.
Zhong Yan hid inside a wooden crate full of liquor, holding his breath.
Footsteps sounded outside, the unmistakable sound of thin-soled leather shoes crossing a wooden floor.
They came closer and closer, then stopped abruptly.
"President He, no one's here."
"Not over here either."
Zhong Yan had just breathed a sigh of relief.
Then the lid above him suddenly opened. He looked up in alarm and saw the face he knew better than any other.
The man usually wore a gentle smile, but now his face was expressionless, his eyes dark as he stared straight at Zhong Yan.
His thin lips parted, his voice cold.
"Baby, I found you."
