Reuniting with My Ex After He Lost His Hearing

“Deaf musician x cheerful ray of sunshine”

Chen Qinghe finds a new part-time job: looking after a sick person. When she arrives at her employer’s home, she discovers the patient is Jiang Zhe, who took a leave of absence from school half a year ago and vanished without a trace.

Her ex-boyfriend.

He’s become even more taciturn and prone to zoning out. He no longer likes the sun or going out, and it’s harder than ever to figure out what he likes to eat... But more importantly, he won’t admit he’s her ex!

That won’t do.

Chen Qinghe brings him a bowl of clear noodle soup and takes out a note she prepared in advance: “Try some. You can pick out the scallions if you don’t want them.”

Jiang Zhe shakes his head.

Chen Qinghe pulls out another note: “What a coincidence. My ex-boyfriend didn’t like them either. He said clear noodle soup was too plain.”

Jiang Zhe: “Sorry, I’m allergic to garlic.”

As if. She isn’t stupid.

Wouldn’t she know if he were allergic?

Chen Qinghe: “What a pity. My ex-boyfriend didn’t like clear noodle soup either, but he liked mild flavors and could eat other things...”

Jiang Zhe immediately says, “I like strongly flavored food.”

Chen Qinghe steps out for a moment, then comes back with mapo tofu and spicy diced chicken, the bright red dried chilies on top impossible to miss.

“Enjoy, boss.” She puts the chopsticks in Jiang Zhe’s hand and hides her grin in her bowl.

Jiang Zhe takes a bite of tofu and frowns at the heat.

He picks up a piece of spicy chicken, and tears well in his eyes.

Jiang Zhe quickly wipes away his tears, then repeatedly presses the food into his rice to soak up the oil before managing to swallow it with a mouthful of rice.

He eats very slowly, the corners of his eyes flushed and his eyes glistening. When he looks up at Chen Qinghe, his eyes are bright, and his once-blank face finally shows some life.

At last, Jiang Zhe sets down his chopsticks and speaks first. “Next time, maybe... make noodles instead.”

Chen Qinghe: Let’s see how long you can keep pretending.
