Rong Mi has known since childhood that the world she lives in is a book, and that she is nothing but a cannon-fodder supporting character destined to die horribly at the hands of the villain. Frail from birth, she cannot force herself to cultivate. To avoid the fate of dying without even a soul left behind, she sets her sights on her stepbrother, Pei Suzhou.
Pei Suzhou is the book's one and only protagonist, blessed with an extraordinary appearance and the strength to be called the greatest under heaven. Most importantly, he is a saintly man who cares for the whole world. In response to her advances, he does look after her attentively, while still observing the proper boundaries between siblings. For now, as long as Rong Mi doesn't do anything bad, she can cling to him and live a good life.
But little by little, things start to go wrong. Ever since Pei Suzhou returned from the Heart-Questioning Illusion, he has seemed like a different person. His moods have become unpredictable, especially when he is around her.
He turns on her over the slightest disagreement. His behavior grows stranger and stranger: he forces her to eat and sleep with him, restricts her friendships and freedom, and even locks her in a dark room. When he discovers that Rong Mi has been secretly exchanging letters with someone, Pei Suzhou flies into a rage in front of her for the first time. He smashes everything in sight and demands to know if she is trying to drive him to his death.
One evening, as she passes through the Spirit Garden, Rong Mi sees Pei Suzhou standing beneath a locust tree in the distance.
She steels herself and walks up to him, only to see him dressed in the clothes he wore the day he entered the Heart-Questioning Illusion. Pei Suzhou's face is pale, and his whole body is smeared with blood. Beneath the overlapping shadows of the tree, his face is so breathtakingly beautiful that he looks like a ghost, utterly unlike his usual self.
As soon as she draws near, he pulls her into his arms. His arms tighten around her as he laughs in a daze. "A Luo, don't be afraid. It's me. Big Brother is back."
A sword strike comes from behind, its killing intent soaring. Rong Mi is seized into another embrace. A large hand presses down hard on the back of her head, stopping her from turning around, yet the voice in her ear is still Pei Suzhou's: "A Luo, don't look. It's a demon. Big Brother will kill him right away."
Beneath the bright moonlight, Rong Mi sees clearly: two identical faces, two Pei Suzhous.
