Crossing the Line

Qin Ke's dead fiancé had a younger sister.

She first saw the girl in the courtyard of the family home. She was tall, with double-lidded eyes that tilted upward at the corners. Her shoulder-length black hair fell loose, and a coarse white hemp sash was tied around her waist. Her irises were pale. In the uncertain light of the courtyard, she gazed at Qin Ke quietly.

Oh, now she remembered. Her fiancé had died on the eve of their planned wedding, and she had become a widow just like that.

A few years later, when she saw her again, Duanmu Xiaobao was the police officer in charge of the case Qin Ke had been caught up in. Sitting across from her, with the top button fastened, her striking features were cold and composed, and she wore the same unsmiling, icy expression she had worn when she drove Qin Ke away.

Qin Ke thought, how had she failed to avoid the Duanmu family? What a bad omen.

Duanmu Xiaobao thought that as long as she made sure not to seek Qin Ke out again, she could still consider herself an upright person.

Not a despicable wretch who thought about her sister-in-law every night.

Strict military discipline had never managed to train this out of her. Human desire was truly terrifying. The moment she saw Qin Ke, every defense she had crumbled and fled, like a landslide.

Officer Duanmu silently swore there would be no second time.
