After Li Shimin died in Hanfeng Hall, a remnant soul lingered in the mortal world for more than two hundred years, unable to leave.
He couldn't bear to part with Chang'an, where people soared to great heights, where spring breezes made horse hooves fly, and where brilliant ministers and gifted scholars shone like shooting stars.
In the Chang'an of later years, he saw the glorious age of the Tang expanding its borders, and the peace of a land where every granary was full.
Then the drums of war thundered through Yuyang, and the An Lushan Rebellion turned Chang'an into a living hell.
That day, the furious remnant soul left Chang'an.
He saw the loyal Yan clan fight to the death for their country. He saw the white-haired Guo Ziyi turn the tide. He saw Tang soldiers at Xiangji Temple resolutely meet the rebel cavalry in a bloody clash, holding their ground from sunrise to sunset...
Time and again, he tried to break free of his invisible shackles and go to their aid, but time and again he could only watch through tears as Tang generals, soldiers, civil officials, scholars, and commoners fell before his eyes, one after another...
He once traveled the long road of nine thousand nine hundred li to the Anxi Protectorate he had personally established in the fourteenth year of the Zhenguan era. There, he watched the abandoned Grand Protector of Anxi lead the last group of white-haired veterans in fighting to the last man to defend Tang territory.
Through the river of time, across the Tang realm, battered and torn, he heard countless voices, young and old, childish and desperate, calling out "Emperor Taizong." But no matter how hard he tried, he could never answer.
Later, Huang Chao came. Zhu Wen came. His remnant soul returned to Chang'an once more.
But where was Chang'an now? The splendor of the past had all been buried. He looked around at desolation, with nothing left of what once was. The imperial treasury had burned to ashes, and the streets were strewn with the bones of nobles!
He looked up at the desolate sky. The sun was still the same as in the Zhenguan era, but Chang'an had become nothing but abandoned streets overgrown with thorns and weeds...
As heaven and earth spun, the remnant soul finally dissolved into nothing. In the next moment, Li Shimin discovered that he was alive again.
This time, he would brave wind and rain to pacify the chaos and save all the people.
He would lead his old ministers from the Zhenguan era to sweep the realm clean of rebels and traitors.
He would once again subdue the four seas with an iron hand.
He would make all nations bow before the Son of Heaven of the Tang.
He would restore the Tang Empire to a glorious age of peace and clear governance!
Chang'an, I'm back!
Reading guide:
1. A satisfying transmigration story, with the Zhenguan emperor and his ministers transmigrating together. The plot takes center stage, and the story is currently set in the late Tang. Emperor Taizong and Empress pairing, one-on-one.
2. I'll add more if I think of anything.
