The Green Jade Pendant

Cheng Yingzhi was born into a humble family. Because her birth mother was an unfavored concubine, she was treated like a servant at home.

Her greatest wish in life was to rise above her station and bring her mother up with her.

The greatest contributor to the family was her legitimate elder brother, who was highly regarded by the Crown Prince. All of the Cheng family's glory came from him.

Cheng Yingzhi often thought that if she could take her brother's place and earn the Crown Prince's favor, she and her mother would never have to live in misery again.

But as a woman, she couldn't take the imperial examinations or enter officialdom. How could she ever catch the Crown Prince's eye?

Then her elder brother died, under strange and suspicious circumstances, and no one dared keep watch over his coffin.

Only Cheng Yingzhi, a concubine-born daughter whose status was even lower than a servant's, was forced to keep vigil in the mourning hall.

She saw a faint green glow coming from her brother's coffin. The light seemed to tempt everyone, calling out: Come here, hurry, glory and riches await!

Cheng Yingzhi moved her brother's coffin. She saw a green jade pendant clutched in his hand.

She reached out and took hold of it...
