The temple rules say that anyone who breaks the precept against romantic love must descend a mountain of blades and cross a sea of fire. Those who succeed may go free; those who fail will vanish into nothingness.
When I was young and read those words, I was full of questions.
I asked my master, "Does the mountain of blades and sea of fire hurt?"
My master lowered his eyes, an emotion I couldn't understand in his gaze. He sighed and said, "It hurts so much you wish you were dead."
Back then, I only thought my master looked very sad. I didn't understand.
Now... I do.
