Love the Kingdom or Love Your Brothers

"Your Majesty, may I ask: Do you love the throne or your brothers?" He Shen Si asked Du Gu Yuan after his coronation.

Wearing his imperial robes, Du Gu Yuan looked up. His eyes peered at him through the strings of his crown. He smiled but did not answer.

.

By the river, Du Gu Yuan was lifted down from his horse.

"Elder brother, may I ask: Do you love the throne or your brothers?"

"Brothers are like limbs, the throne like a head. A man can live after losing a limb, but I wonder, can a king live without his head?" Du Gu Yuan replied coldly.

"Good. Then please cut off one of your arms, elder brother," He Shen Si said.

Du Gu Yuan was forced to sever one of his own arms, his proud face dark with anger.

He Shen Si moved closer, letting the red blood stain his armor. He leaned beside the man in yellow robes and whispered, "This subject just wonders: can a king live without his arms?"
