(My Match Was Mixed Up in a Period Novel, and I Came Out on Top is now updating. Its blurb is below.) This story's blurb:
Tao Jiang started working as a housekeeper for Han Changfeng when she was eighteen, and stayed for ten years. When Han Changfeng asked her if she would marry him, she said yes, of course. She had loved him for ten years.
After they married, Han Changfeng was just as distant as he'd been when he was her employer. His relatives, who used to order the little housekeeper around, could no longer boss her about, so they sneered, “It's not like Han Changfeng loves her. He's just afraid she'll get married and leave, and then there'll be no one to cook for him.”
After they married, Han Changfeng got even busier, spending all his time in the research lab. He gave Tao Jiang a whole pile of pills, saying they were vitamins to keep her healthy, and handed over his entire salary and bonuses. It was all very well, but a marriage without the warmth of love felt terribly dull.
Only when Han Changfeng collapsed in the research lab did Tao Jiang learn that he had discovered her illness and proposed to her that very day. Afterward, he devoted all his time and energy to researching a special medicine to keep her alive, until he himself was exhausted and collapsed.
Han Changfeng said guiltily, “Tao Jiang, I should have proposed in the first month after you came to work for me. When I learned about your illness, I should have put everything aside and stayed by your side. It feels like I made the wrong choice at every turn. I never gave you the best kind of love.”
Tao Jiang wept. What she had thought was a loveless marriage had actually been the best love, hidden deep within his heart.
The two went home, and for the first time, they made love with such passion. When Tao Jiang opened her eyes, she had been reborn in 1983.
After being reborn, Tao Jiang left behind the inferiority complex she'd had in her previous life and became proactive. Han Changfeng backed away in alarm. “You little housekeeper, what are you doing in my study in the middle of the night? Get out now, or I'll fire you tomorrow.”
Tao Jiang felt sorry for him and feared he'd work himself to death. She brought him snow pear with fritillaria. “Eat this and go to bed. Otherwise, I'll quit tomorrow.”
After a while, Han Changfeng was full of energy thanks to his regular schedule, and had plenty of stamina for his medical research. There was just one problem: his housekeeper was too good at flirting. He needed to talk to her about it.
After she'd flirted with him for a while, his relatives wanted to use the little housekeeper as a free laborer. Han Changfeng flatly refused. “You can order me around if you want, but what gives you the right to order my housekeeper around?”
A relative wanted Tao Jiang to provide postpartum care, and Han Changfeng scolded them. “Whoever gave birth can take care of the baby. Tao Jiang has to study for the college entrance exam. She can't afford to waste time.”
After the exam, Tao Jiang enrolled in medical school. Han Changfeng came to give a lecture, and Tao Jiang asked him in a perfectly serious manner, “Professor Han, do you have a moment? I'd like to ask you about a pathology case.”
After nightfall, Tao Jiang barged into the study and ordered, “Han Changfeng, what time is it? Why aren't you asleep? Do you want to die young?”
During her internship, Tao Jiang followed the youngest vice president around with utmost respect. “Dean Han, could I borrow a few minutes? I'd like to ask you about a difficult case.”
While asking her question, the perfectly serious Tao Jiang quietly slipped a boiled egg into the pocket of the perfectly serious young dean's white coat. “Have a snack. You're not allowed to skip meals.”
After nightfall, Tao Jiang took a bath to soothe her aching body and pouted at the workaholic bent over his desk. “I've been on my feet all day, and my legs hurt. Dean Han, could you give me a massage?”
Han Changfeng was feeling quite wronged. “People are already gossiping behind my back that I'm taking advantage of an intern. Could you spare me some dignity? We've been married for years. Can't we have a proper wedding banquet?”
Next story: My Match Was Mixed Up in a Period Novel, and I Came Out on Top. Blurb:
At the back entrance of the matchmaking center, Xia Yiyou spotted a man in a police uniform and went up to him. “Comrade Zhou Chen?”
Zhou Chen, who had come to pick up his younger brother, nodded. “Yes. And you are?”
Xia Yiyou said, “I'm Xia Yiyou, the one who's been corresponding with you. Thank you for believing me. Come with me to the matchmaking meeting, and I'll make sure you have a safe journey.”
Zhou Chen: “...”
The Xia family wanted Xia Yiyou to go to a matchmaking meeting, so she brought home a strikingly handsome young man and told them, “I have a boyfriend. He has a Beijing household registration, and he's a police officer too.”
After the matchmaking meeting, Xia Yiyou examined the man's uniform carefully. “Where did you buy that fake police uniform? It looks pretty real.”
Zhou Chen: “...” It was real in the first place.
Xia Yiyou said, “Your fiancée has someone who's secretly in love with her. On your way back to the city, he'll sell you to human traffickers, who'll take you to work in an illegal coal mine. Don't make friends with strangers along the way. Go straight to the police station when you arrive, and call your family to come get you. Do what I say, and you'll make it home safely.”
After saying goodbye to Xia Yiyou, Zhou Chen bought a ticket for the same train and boarded in plain clothes to keep watch. He ended up busting a major human trafficking ring.
His younger brother made it home safely. After getting a haircut and a bath and cleaning up, he said to Zhou Chen, “Oh, by the way, before I came back to the city, a young girl wrote me a letter asking me to pretend to be her boyfriend before I returned. She said she'd make sure I got home safely. I didn't go, but look, I still got home safe and sound. Should I write and report her for lying?”
Zhou Chen: “...The man who offered you a cigarette on the way was a human trafficker. If she hadn't warned you, you'd probably have been sold off to work in an illegal coal mine by now.”
A comment on Xia Yiyou's page: “This is unbelievable. My great-uncle, who was sold to an illegal coal mine and worked himself to death after six months, was named the Internet's most handsome father-in-law this morning.”
“Here's a tip for new readers: the more spoilers there are in the comments, the more likely it is that your ancestors will get a message.”
“Speaking from experience: yesterday I was worrying about next month's rent in my rental apartment, and today my old two-hundred-square-meter house is being demolished. Xia Yiyou can really bring good fortune to my ancestors.”
