In the seventh year of her relationship with Pei Du, Jiang Yu finally asked to break up.
She left the little home they'd shared for seven years, taking her plain but messy suitcase with her. While Pei Du was working overtime at the office, she even took the dog named after Pei Du.
With the dog in the car, she drove away from Chengdu, leaving the bustling city behind and heading for a sparsely populated little town.
The remote town was quiet and nearly deserted. In its only bar, Jiang Yu met a woman who came against the flow of people to stand before her.
The woman's brows seemed painted with ink, her skin as smooth as jade. Like a white camellia blooming in the night, she sat in her wheelchair and smiled softly at Jiang Yu, then placed a willow branch still beaded with dew in her hand.
“Liu Zhaowan,” she said. “I think we've met before.”

Pei Du was twenty-seven that year. She had known Jiang Yu for ten years. From rivals who couldn't stand each other to lovers who shared every day, nearly half her life had been entangled with the same name.
When Jiang Yu asked to break up, Pei Du was at the office preparing for her next meeting. Her phone showed that it was less than three minutes away, and after weighing her options, she replied, “Let's talk after the meeting.”
But when the meeting ended, she couldn't reach that familiar number anymore. She returned home to find everything in disarray. The familiar figure who always waited on the sofa was nowhere to be found, and neither was the dog she'd raised herself.
“Damn it.” For the first time, the cool-headed and disciplined Director Pei swore.
It took Pei Du several days to learn Jiang Yu's whereabouts from their mutual friends. Then she took an extended leave and drove through the night to the small city in the northwest.
But when she finally spotted that familiar figure in the endless crowd, another woman was already by Jiang Yu's side.
Beneath the moonlight over the Gobi, she walked closer, step by step. Appearing before Jiang Yu once more, she handed back the ring Jiang Yu had left behind. Her eyes, touched by a faint trace of wind and frost, reflected her lover's face.
“Yu, come home with me.”
A figure stepped between them just then.
The woman in the wheelchair smiled gently, her expression still tender, but her words carried an indescribable chill. She looked at the newcomer and spoke unhurriedly.
“Miss Pei, it seems you've arrived too late. Miss Jiang and I made plans a quarter of an hour ago.”
