Ebony Meets Spring

[The next novel is now out: "Who Shall Send the Letter?" Clever little schemer X master strategist]

[Gruff tribal chief from an ethnic minority on the grasslands X southern jasmine]

Zhou Mo's legal aid work involved accompanying court officials to the grasslands to deliver summonses. She waited from morning until sunset before finally seeing the person involved return, but the moment he did, he jumped into a black SUV and drove off.

She chased him all the way into the wilderness and finally forced the car to stop. She snapped a pair of restraints around his sinewy wrist and gasped, just before her low blood sugar kicked in, "You can't get away now."

When Zhou Mo woke again, she was in a Mongolian yurt lit by a butter lamp. A child was feeding her water. When the child saw her open her eyes, his dark eyes lit up, and he shouted, "Lou Wangdong, your wife is awake!"

Wait, the defendant Zhou Mo was after wasn't called Lou Wangdong.

The man's deep, ebony eyes turned toward her. Zhou Mo silently wondered where things had gone wrong, but then he spoke in a low voice. "I don't care what Mom told you, but I'm not looking for a match."

An idea to play along and turn the situation to her advantage sprang up in Zhou Mo's mind. "Help me find someone, and I won't chase after you."

Lou Wangdong's eyes darkened like a wolf's on the grasslands. "If you don't let go, we'll be sleeping here tonight."

"Lou Wangdong encounters a sprig of jasmine in the heart of the grasslands"

[Quick-witted Republican-era mail carrier X sharp-eyed antiques dealer]

As usual, Lianqiao was packing letters in the post office sorting room that day when she noticed a package without an inspection stamp, just as she was about to put it in a mailbag.

By then, the foreign concession had become an isolated enclave, and all letters had to be inspected and stamped before they could be sent. Yet Lianqiao slipped the unchecked package into the mailbag bound for Hong Kong.

The next day, she saw the same mysterious package, along with a wanted notice that had appeared in yesterday's newspaper: the search for Qin Yanchu, an antiques dealer in Shanghai.

The photograph showed a tall, slender profile taken in a train carriage. It was blurry, but the reward was eye-catching. When she returned to the previous day once more, she encountered her quarry aboard an international ocean liner bound for Hong Kong.

In the enclosed first-class cabin, Qin Yanchu sat across from her on a velvet sofa, legs crossed and dressed in a suit. An inscrutable smile touched his eyes and brows as he coaxed her:

"Miss, that suitcase of yours seems to contain something more valuable than the reward for capturing me. Would you like to make a deal?"

Lianqiao wondered: if she chose him this time, could she escape the eerie time loop known as "Yesterday Repeats"?
