After the Battle of Chi You, the Celestial Dynasty fell apart. Its magnificent palaces crumbled, and the age that followed had plenty of warlords, but no true overlord.
Order collapsed, corruption ran rampant. Everyone wanted to rule the world, yet no one dared to claim it.
The south was rich, the north poor and weak.
Zou Yao was the daughter of the wealthiest and most powerful governor in Chuzhou in the south. Countless warlords wanted to marry her.
The north was said to be poor and weak, battered by droughts and floods, with no harvests. People had resorted to eating their own children, and war, infighting, and chaos were everywhere.
After considering her options, she discarded all the portrait proposals from the north and chose the most handsome man, the one who looked most like a future overlord, to be her husband.
On her wedding day, her procession stretched for miles, decked out in red and more splendid than any other.
But a band of savage mountain bandits raided the wedding procession. Zou Yao turned pale and screamed as they carried her off to somewhere even worse than the poor, weak north.
This was a lawless no-man's-land on the border between north and south, where no one dared interfere and there was no true overlord.
It was even more brutal and uncouth, savage and feverish, bloody and violent. Here, might made right.
A strong, imposing man carried Zou Yao off and threw her into a house. In a frenzy, he demanded her, wanting her to warm his bed and be his woman.
He was so rough and powerful that Zou Yao saw him kill an entire pack of leopards with her own eyes.
He was as tyrannical and foolish as King Zhou of Shang, and seemed on the verge of becoming the overlord of this place.
Zou Yao wept beautifully, like a pear blossom in the rain. She wanted to go home, but didn't dare say so, much less provoke the man.
With a cold little face, she snapped, "I'll only be the overlord's wife! Listen up, you bumpkin: I mean the overlord of the whole world!"
She humored him and sweet-talked him, all while looking for a chance to escape. She ran away three times, each attempt ending in a long, drawn-out ordeal.
Found and brought back, battered and haggard, Zou Yao clung to the man's scorching chest and broke down sobbing as though she were about to die.
"You've got the nerve to cry? Is warming my bed going to kill you?"
The tyrant overlord scowled. "You still want to be the overlord's wife? Damn it, even if I rule the whole world, I won't marry you!"
After saying that, he put her down and, feeling humiliated, treated her wounds himself.
