Lu Chengfeng frowned and glanced at the postmark. It was from ten years ago.

Back then, he must have been in high school: cold, hard to approach, and a perennial fixture at the top of his class.

His wife, Yun Wan, asked gently, “What are you looking at?”

Lu Chengfeng calmly folded the letter and walked over. He lowered his eyes and stroked her swollen belly. “Nothing.”

It was probably another admirer from his school days. He’d had countless admirers back then, and he was married now. He didn’t want Yun Wan to worry.

Then one day, while they were preparing the baby’s room,

Lu Chengfeng was cleaning and accidentally knocked over the wooden chest his wife had brought with her when she married into the family.

A thin folder fell to the floor.

Inside, neatly kept, were several of his old exam papers, along with rough drafts he’d used and forgotten about, and excerpts from his essays.

Lu Chengfeng’s fingers paused for a moment.

Suddenly, his breath began to tremble.

At the bottom of the folder, mixed in with discarded weekly reports, he saw several assignments belonging to his wife.

The handwriting was youthful, but he recognized it.

The unrequited love letter she’d sent him, the one that never received a reply.

There was someone in Yun Wan’s heart. She had secretly loved him for over ten years,

from a young, awkward girl to finally becoming his wife and carrying his child.

She thought her hardships were finally over.

But only when her heart was breaking and she begged him for a divorce did she understand:

On the night they broke up, a heavy snowfall blanketed Beijing.

Standing in front of her, he said with a somewhat cool expression, “I have to get married.”

Those five words left her mind momentarily blank. She stood there stunned for several seconds before softly replying, “Okay.”

She had always known her place. In his circle, she could be his girlfriend for a while, then quietly leave when it was time for him to marry. She knew that was as good as their relationship could ever get.

She lowered her head. “Then I’ll leave Beijing tomorrow.”

He was silent for a long time.

The snow fell harder. At last, he said quietly, “You can keep the house you were living in. I’ll give you three million in savings, the jewelry, clothes, and car I bought you. You can keep them all... Is there anything else you want?”

She knew he didn’t want any ties beyond his marriage, so she softly and obediently replied, “No.”

A week later, news of his engagement spread.

Three weeks later, she found out she was pregnant.

When she left the hospital, the snow was still falling. She remembered a winter they’d spent together, when Beijing had been blanketed in snow as well.

He had come out of Fuyou Street, his uniform tucked beneath his overcoat, and waited for her by the roadside for two whole hours.

She hurried over, out of breath, and looked up apologetically. “I thought you’d gone home.”

He held an umbrella and looked at her.

It was dark. The dim streetlight shone from behind him on his left. One half of his body was wet with snow, the other half lost in the gloom.

His lips parted, and he said softly, “If you don’t come, I won’t go home.”

Now,

he was really going to have a home, with another woman.

“That was the life you lived after leaving Beijing.”
