I Pity My Frail Sister-in-Law

My elder brother returned home from the campaign with a woman by his side.

He said her name was Liu Zhiyi, and that she had once saved his life.

Lady Liu had a hard lot in life. Her mother died when she was young, and her father was a drunk who loved money more than anything. He wanted to marry her off as a concubine to a local rich man.

Unable to bear it, my brother brought Lady Liu home, intending to marry her as his proper wife.

He was leaving for the battlefield again tonight, and told me to take good care of Lady Liu.

Lady Liu gazed at me timidly, her limpid eyes like the misty rain of Jiangnan. She moved with graceful poise and bowed low.

Just one look, and I found myself hoping that my half-brother would die on the battlefield tomorrow.

An ancient-style story about sisters-in-law.
