In Eastern Europe, everyone knew Hua Qian. In North America, everyone knew Dai Yao.
But when did these two people disappear from the world without a trace?
Old-fashioned arranged marriage between families + childhood friends who grew up as siblings + love after marriage
From childhood on, Dai Yao called Hua Qian "Brother Qian" (Qie), and he doted on her like a little sister.
In 1999, family needs brought the two into an arranged marriage;
In 2001, their families' business partnership ended, and they dissolved their marriage.
After leaving a wedding photograph by the door of their marital home, they went their separate ways. He went to Europe for work, while she headed to North America to study. From then on, they lost contact.
The next time she heard news of him was in 2010, when a mutual old friend from their younger days came to see Dai Yao in the United States and said, "Hua Qian is critically ill. He's left a will, and you're his sole heir."
"I don't believe it," she said, shaking her head as she held up the document. "Those words don't sound like Brother Qian."
"I wrote the will for him. He was already too weak to do it himself. His exact words were, 'Leave my property to Yao.' He must be the only person in the world who calls you Yao, right?"
"I want to see him."
In a life scripted without love, they had clung to each other for warmth as children. When they grew up, Dai Yao thought that if they left behind their family, deep as the sea, and the decadent restraints of their lavish household, they would both live well.
2001-2010: the most turbulent years in Eastern Europe, and the most painful period in New York. They climbed and emerged reborn, all for the sake of the best wishes they had given each other before parting.
"They said you wanted to come see me that year, but something happened on the way, and you've been ill ever since." At his bedside, she said, "Brother Qian, do you know? In these ten years, not one sunset in America has been as beautiful as the evening glow outside our wedding home that day."
Happy ending
