Lin Zhi has always liked his childhood friend, Ling Zhi.
Ling Zhi is an Alpha, and his pheromones are a 90% match for Lin Zhi's. Their names are a 90% match, too.
Lin Zhi, Ling Zhi. A perfect match, right?
Everyone says they're made for each other, and the elders of both families say they'll get married one day. Lin Zhi is delighted.
But Ling Zhi only sees him as an ordinary friend. He has often joked that he can't stand Lin Zhi's orange-scented pheromones and that the two of them could never be together.
Lin Zhi is a little hurt. Afraid of making Ling Zhi dislike him, he can only carefully hide his feelings.
Later, Ling Zhi grows into a handsome, perfect Alpha, starts playing the field, and constantly asks Lin Zhi to set him up with Omegas.
Lin Zhi is always secretly miserable, but still carries out Ling Zhi's requests like a loyal dog.
He tells himself he can't help it. Ling Zhi doesn't like him, so there's nothing he can do.
Lin Zhi thinks his love for Ling Zhi is a secret, and that Ling Zhi will never know about his bitter, one-sided love.
So even when Ling Zhi goes on dates with cute Omegas right in front of him, stabbing him in the heart, Lin Zhi thinks it's his own fault for having dared to want more.
Until one day, Lin Zhi goes to drop something off for Ling Zhi and hears him getting intimate with someone inside-
The Omega: "Aren't you afraid Lin Zhi will catch us like this? His love for you is as obvious as gold in the middle of the road. Don't tell me you don't know?"
That familiar, pleasant voice chuckles twice, sounding casual and unconcerned. "Of course I know. But he's been shamelessly clinging to me for years, and I can't get rid of him. Letting him see this might be just the thing to make him give up on me."
Lin Zhi trembles, takes two hurried steps back, and flees.
-
At some point, Ling Zhi realizes that his childhood friend and little sidekick has stopped clinging to him.
At first, he thinks it's because he's got a new boyfriend and Lin Zhi is upset, so he doesn't pay much attention.
But even after half a month, Lin Zhi still hasn't come back to his side.
Ling Zhi gets a little annoyed. He thinks that if Lin Zhi doesn't like his boyfriend, he can just dump him. Then he can say a few nice things, and surely he'll be able to coax Lin Zhi back.
But when he finally manages to find his childhood friend, the other man looks surprised. "You didn't know? I've already cut ties with you."
Ling Zhi feels as if the sky has fallen.
-
Later, Ling Zhi spends a whole night outside in thin clothes in twenty-below weather. His eyes are red as he stubbornly stares at Lin Zhi. "You waited for me all night back then. Now I'm making it up to you."
"I'll make up for everything you've done for me over the years. Please come back."
But Lin Zhi says in confusion, "But I don't like you anymore. I don't like you, so your pain, your sadness, or your attempts to make it up to me mean nothing to me."
Ling Zhi is in tears. He's such a fucking idiot. He had a great hand with a 90% compatibility match, and he managed to play it into a complete disaster.
