Sun Shangxiang

Her second older brother, Sun Quan, recruits one of Huang Zu’s men from Jiangxia, a general named Gan Ning.

Gan Ning has only just arrived in Jiangdong. He and Ling Tong are sworn enemies, but he finds Sun Shangxiang rather amusing.

When Sun Shangxiang is told she must marry Liu Bei as his second wife, she causes an uproar throughout Jiangdong.

Gan Ning is the first to grab her and tell her that after enjoying all the privileges of being a princess of Jiangdong for so long, she should do something for Jiangdong in return.

Sun Shangxiang ends up marrying Liu Bei after all.

On their wedding night, the dignified, gentle older man doesn’t touch her. He only smiles and promises to take good care of her from then on.

Sun Shangxiang follows Liu Bei to Jingzhou. She’s still a child inside, yet now she has a half-grown boy chasing after her and calling her Mother.

The officials in Jingzhou are all wary of her. They casually criticize her and gossip behind her back… For the first time, she experiences the loneliness of having no one to rely on.

Then Liu Bei sets out to conquer Xichuan. Sun Shangxiang tries to take his only son, Liu Shan, back to Jiangdong with her, but fails. She understands that she and Liu Bei have no future together.

Back in Jiangdong, her mother still dotes on her and her brothers still love her, but many things have changed, and the gossip behind her back has never stopped…

When her brother tries to find her another husband, all the prominent Jiangdong families steer clear of her. Then the general named Gan Ning steps forward once more and says, “I’ll marry her.”

Sun Shangxiang is simply swept along by history, growing up little by little.
