My Dad Is the Regent

My father is the Regent.

Before my mother died, she gave me a jade pendant and told me to go to the capital and find that supreme man. She said he was the most handsome, the gentlest, the most dashing man around.

She also said my father was the most powerful man in the world. If I found him and showed him this jade pendant,

I would never have to go hungry or be cold again.

He would love me and even give me the finest things in the world.

My mother said a lot before she died, but she never told me my father's name.

She just stubbornly insisted I should look for the most handsome man.

So I stumbled my way to the capital, hid behind a tavern, and listened in as people bragged.

They said the Regent was the youngest and most handsome man in the world, a man with absolute power.

As soon as I heard that, I sprang to my feet.

Wasn't that my father?

So I eagerly ran out to stop the Regent's horse, then excitedly held up the jade pendant my mother had given me.

I even grinned, showing the gaps left by my recently lost baby teeth, and shouted as loudly as I could, "Dad!!!"

Mom, my good days are finally here!

The men who had been drinking and bragging put down their cups. "The Regent is cruel by nature, moody and unpredictable, all-powerful, and steeped in evil."
