After My Childhood Nemesis Took the Throne

Before the new emperor ascended the throne, Ning Zhaoyue, Princess Ming Shu, was the most envied noblewoman in the capital.

Her father was a founding hero of the Great Jing dynasty and a first-rank Duke of Pingguo, while her aunt was the empress. She grew up in the palace, cherished by the emperor and empress, and lived a life of unparalleled luxury.

Her life had gone smoothly for more than a decade. If anything had ever troubled her, it was that she and the crown prince, son of the late empress, had never gotten along, as if they were simply destined to clash.

When the crown prince ascended the throne, the Ning family began to decline.

The Duke of Pingguo's household brought Ning Zhaoyue back from the palace and fell in line with the new emperor.

Even before her aunt retired to the Northern Palace, she carefully warned her: “Things are different now. Remember to keep your temper in check.”

With a new emperor came a new court. Everyone in the capital tried to discern the emperor's wishes, and the Duke of Pingguo's household found its position at court growing increasingly awkward.

The Duke of Pingguo sighed. All those years of cultivating ties in the palace had come to nothing, and they had even needlessly offended His Majesty.

But his wife's words gave him an idea: “The princess is of marriageable age.”

The trouble was, her prospects were now neither high nor low enough to make a good match.

An accident forced Ning Zhaoyue into an engagement with a young nobleman.

The duke's household was eager to marry off the daughter whom the new emperor had always disliked, and the two families quickly agreed.

Her parents had decided, and her aunt was in the Northern Palace. There was no time to wait for help from afar.

Ning Zhaoyue searched her room for a long while, eventually finding a jade token and making her way into the palace.

Inside the Zichen Hall, she cautiously put on a just-right smile. “Your Majesty, Imperial Brother, Brother...”

The young emperor turned a page of his book, his voice calm and flat. “Have you gotten into trouble again?”
