When Pear Blossoms Bloom on a Thousand Trees

I had to take my sister's place in marriage. They said my husband-to-be was powerful and influential, but cruel, ruthless, stingy, ugly, and old! My sister had been cherished by our parents since childhood, and she wept as if her heart were breaking. So I, the sickly girl whom neither father nor mother loved, had to marry in her place.

Fine, fine. Worst case, I'll bash my head against a wall after the wedding and die!

On the first night of our marriage, I saw the face of the supposedly ugly groom.

Wait! Don't bash your head in yet! I've never seen such a tall, handsome young man!

I'll hold off for now and do it another day!

A month into our marriage, I received gifts from my supposedly stingy husband, brought back from one of his cases out of town.

Wait! My two rooms were soon piled high with jewelry, fine clothes, and all kinds of novel trinkets! He even said that if there wasn't enough room, he'd give me another residence!

I'll hold off for now and do it another day!

A year into our marriage, I shared a bed with my supposedly cruel and ruthless husband.

Well... the cruel and ruthless part was true. I cried all night! He was absolutely inhuman!

But he comforted me both in public and in private, so... I'll do it another day!

Rumors began to spread that he doted on me. When my family heard, they brought my sister over, hoping to switch our marriages back.

My heart sank. I'd been living such a good life that I'd forgotten it was never meant to be mine. Still, I hadn't bashed my head in, and I'd enjoyed a few years of comfort. It wasn't a bad deal, though I was a little reluctant to part with him.

But who could have guessed that my husband wanted only me, from beginning to end?
