Beyond the Endless Plains Lies a Mountain of Spring

The Prince Regent was attacked and lay unconscious for months. The imperial physicians sent from the palace regretted to report that he might not have much time left.

Though he still clung to life, the various factions in the manor could no longer keep their masks on and began fighting over power.

As it happened, the Prince Regent was my husband. Worse, he hadn't loved me before he fell unconscious and had never once protected me. He was a complete bastard.

But I hadn't expected that, while plotting to throw me out, they would also try to finish off the Prince Regent ahead of time.

A bastard he might be, but he had saved my life when I was eight. I tried my hardest to stay by his side and care for him, just to repay that kindness, and, as a little bonus... to indulge the faintest, most insignificant spark of affection.

It really wasn't easy being outnumbered. Sometimes I hoped he would wake up and deal with those villains, but then I remembered how he'd always protected them and let me suffer. Whether he woke up or not wouldn't make much difference.

I suppose he was rather pitiful. Before he lost consciousness, everyone he'd protected had been plotting against him. As he lay dying, no one cared. The only person who shed tears for him was me, the woman he didn't love.

But on the night before I was to be driven out of the manor for good, he woke up.

Not only did he wake up, he seemed like a different person.

The manor servants who had always bullied me tried their old tricks, but they no longer worked.

Whatever I said, he believed.

When I smiled, he smiled too. When I didn't smile, he kept smiling anyway. Even when I lost my temper, he still managed to smile!

The only time he stopped smiling was when I cried.
