Only on the brink of death did Skadi learn that her earl husband had always loved her.

Her husband had hardly ever come home. For her sake, he spent seven years tracking evil spirits abroad, only to die amid a tide of corpses in an ancient mountain castle on a night of torrential rain.

At the very end, the raven brought back only his bloodied wedding ring.

Skadi thought that if she could see him again... she would stop pretending to be indifferent and stop running away.

She would love him back just as fiercely.

And then...

She opened her eyes and found herself fifteen days before disaster struck.

Rotting evil spirits crawled back to the surface. Infected humans turned into monsters and surrounded the castle.

They staggered and roamed the estate.

Held tight in a man's arms, Skadi kissed, caressed, and joined with him before the castle window, where lightning flashed and thunder rumbled, as if they might die the very next second.

Drenched in sweat, she still remembered to look up.

A young, golden-haired knight was watching her from outside the door, his eyes damp and fragile as a stray dog.

"Please... stop hoping for anything from him."

"Your husband is the rotting evil spirit who spread all this calamity."

That was what the knight told her.

Of course Skadi understood what he was trying to do.

But she had made herself a promise.

So it didn't matter who the evil spirit was.

On this night, with monsters roaming the estate, he had returned safely from that ancient castle. She was ready to stop caring about everything else.
