So he was sent back to the children's welfare home. Guanguan noticed that a cold-faced older boy had joined the Sunflower Class. During games, the boy always tossed him the watermelon ball. At mealtimes, the boy gave him his own strawberry yogurt. When Zhuangzhuang bullied him, the boy bravely stepped in to shield him from Zhuangzhuang's fists, each as big as a red bean bun. The older boy always stayed right by his side. With red-rimmed eyes, he told him that the days ahead would be dangerous, and that he'd protect him even if it cost him his life. Guanguan was a cute and polite little boy. One day, he gathered his courage and stood in front of the older boy. "Hewwo." "Do you wanna sit in the back of my car and go for a wided?" Wei Cheng glanced at his battered, hand-me-down toy cloud car and silently nodded. At that moment, Wei Cheng and Guanguan both heard a ding in their ears. [Binding successful! The two stories have separate worlds and character arcs, so you can read either one on its own. Blurb: 1. Guanguan is actually a little money-pot spirit who can make money grow. He makes kind people rich and brings misfortune to the wicked. But Guanguan, who has turned into a five-year-old child, doesn't know this. Neither do the people of Maoxi Village. When Guanguan appeared in the village, he was clutching a little clay pot. A single thin rag was all he had on, and his bare feet were painfully red from the cold as he shivered in the freezing wind. Luckily, a tall, thin older boy rescued him. But the older boy was living under someone else's roof too, and was beaten bloody for saving him. Guanguan couldn't speak. All he could do was cling to his big brother and cry. 2. Wei Cheng's father died when he was four, and his mother remarried when he was seven. At just eight, he caught a bad chill from working. His cough wouldn't go away, and after coughing up blood for days, he still wasn't getting better. Wei Cheng didn't want to die just like that. He planned to go into the mountains and dig up something to trade for medicine, but instead he found a filthy little child. The child looked about five, with a round, delicate, adorable face. But the exposed skin had turned purple from the cold. He probably wouldn't live much longer. After a long hesitation, Wei Cheng brought the child home and hid him at the Wei family house. But his uncles found out anyway. They beat Wei Cheng badly and sent Guanguan away too. But the villagers who adopted Guanguan treated him terribly. He grew thin and sallow, with purple pinch marks all over his face and body. Whenever anyone looked at him, he would curl up like a frightened kitten and cry. Wei Cheng couldn't bear it. He went to the Wang family and took Guanguan back, then left the Wei household. Deep snow sealed off the mountains, and the beasts hibernated. A poor person's life held no promise at all. But eight-year-old Wei Cheng kept Guanguan's hand tightly in his own. He thought, This winter will pass soon. 3. The Wei family thought that once winter ended, they would hear that Wei Cheng and the child he'd found had starved to death. But when spring came, they saw Wei Cheng holding bright silver coins and going to buy farmland! Before long, word spread that the two brothers were raising chickens and sheep, making a fortune from valuable furs, and planning to build a big house. They'd even had the good fortune to study reading and writing at the private school in town... The Wei family turned green with envy, and the Wang family, who had mistreated Guanguan, wanted to take him back... But every ill-intentioned person was kept outside by a wild beast that looked part wolf and part dog. No one knew that the inconspicuous little clay pot Guanguan always clutched slowly changed color over time, from copper to silver... and then gold.
