Madwoman Empress vs. loyal-dog General
The heroine's story:
Baili Si, the young princess of the Great Jing, was praised by everyone as a little white flower. But amid her royal brothers' struggle for power, she was sent away for a political marriage. Not one official in the entire court stood up for her. Only her childhood friend, the heir of the Xiao family, Xiao Beiyu, was willing to lead an army against a foreign state on her behalf. But he fell into an ambush during a battle, and his forces were utterly defeated.
Xiao Beiyu and his father were branded traitors who had colluded with the enemy. To clear the Xiao family's name, Baili Si was willing to join forces with villains and overthrow the imperial authority. In secret, she stoked the open and covert struggles among her royal brothers, waiting to profit from their conflict. From then on, she embarked on a bloody path, killing her brothers and father. The powerful minister who had raised her to the throne had thought she would be a puppet emperor. He never expected her to be ruthless and decisive, impossible to control. The Empress's actions grew ever more unpredictable.
The hero's story:
His young princess was a treasured jewel in an ivory tower, yet she became a stepping stone in the struggle for power. She was a product of power, an emperor pushed onto the throne by those who wielded it. He wanted her to secure her position as ruler and would guard her realm for her. But later, it seemed she could hold on to that position without him.
On the day of the palace coup, as commander of the Imperial Guards, he led his troops to slaughter the rebels. In the chaos, he searched for his young princess, intending only to help her escape the palace.
But she showed no intention of leaving. She stood still, gazing steadily at him. He suddenly realized that this coup was not as simple as princes fighting for the throne. In disbelief, he asked, "Your Highness, the Crown Prince and the Third Prince have launched a coup and forced their way into the palace. Did you have a hand in it?"
She looked at him with dignity and answered without a trace of guilt, "If my royal brothers can sit on that throne, why can't I? I want it too. Are you going to stop me?"
Xiao Beiyu: "What did Han Yu promise you? How could you dare make a deal with him? And what did you promise him in return?"
Baili Si: "I only want to secure my hold over this realm. I want power in my hands, with the authority over life and death across the land resting with me alone. I don't care who I make a deal with, or what kind of deal it is."
Xiao Beiyu: "If Your Highness wants to secure the realm, then I'll guard it for you. Why dirty your own hands?"
He plunged a solid blade into his own body, then turned and disappeared into the panicked crowd.
That single stab was his answer. After that night, his young princess ascended to the highest throne.
