Sheng Qi is a low-level employee at the Framework Management Bureau. Bound to a Balancing System, he is responsible for playing the brief on-screen "CP" roles of important supporting characters in books.
The protagonist bottom has a difficult upbringing and suffers through countless hardships, the protagonist top wavers between two sides in painful indecision, and the fake young master turns vengefully dark after being betrayed. The whole book revolves around the three of them and their lives gone awry, with both physical and emotional torment.
Sheng Qi only has to play three minor background characters, fulfilling the author's need to balance out the important supporting cast: a contract marriage between a wealthy CEO and a decorative spouse; two workplace professionals, a psychologist and a family doctor; and a handsome campus heartthrob and an older student sharing his dorm.
Though he has the same face in all three roles, he moves through the edges of the wealthy-family novel's battlefield under three different identities. Sheng Qi is convinced that as long as he appears rarely enough, nobody will see through him.
But gradually, Sheng Qi discovers that the supporting characters may not need a CP after all. The doctor wants to study abroad, and the campus heartthrob wants to make his debut in the center position. But the CEO wants to go on a marriage reality show?
