She once relied on tiny details to read people so she wouldn't offend the powerful and could survive in the imperial palace. Now those same skills have become the key to Sheng Xia's investigations and pursuit of suspects.
Everyone at the detective agency says Sheng Xia has a talent for tracking, but only she knows the truth: it is a survival skill honed by a woman from the inner palace, who had to learn how to stay alive.
Sheng Xia never imagined that the skills she developed to survive could also guide her to the truth.

Please note:
The setting is an alternate world, and everything in the story serves the plot.

There are no feelings beyond friendship, brotherhood, sisterhood, and camaraderie among the four of them.

After working overtime for a full month, overworked office drone Song Yao finally encountered a strange creature in a dream, wearing a black robe and holding a scythe. He'd slept for less than three hours.
With the part of his brain that hadn't yet been crammed full of work, he thought briefly and figured out who the creature was: the Grim Reaper.
But how could a native-born, progressive young man from China possibly be escorted to the afterlife by a Western reaper?
Before he could ask, the Reaper raised a hand and pointed straight at him.
Its finger, gaunt and pale, like a withered branch rotting in a shadowy corner of deep winter, pointed at Song Yao with unwavering certainty.
"Time to go to work."
Song Yao broke down.
0.01 seconds after dying from overwork, Song Yao still hadn't figured out why he had seen a Western reaper instead of the Ox-Head and Horse-Face guardians of the underworld, when he found himself wrapped in a huge black robe.
A cold scythe, weightless to the touch, was also shoved into his hand by an invisible force.
"Hello, you dropped your scythe." Song Yao held out the scythe the Reaper had shoved into his hands.
But his hand seemed to have grown together with the scythe, as if it had always been part of his body.
The Reaper pretended not to understand Song Yao's refusal. The next second, he took Song Yao to a crime scene.
A translucent shadow floated unsteadily before the victim's body, sprawled on the ground.
This was the form of a human soul.
When the soul saw Song Yao and the other Reaper, it drifted toward them helplessly, like a celestial body drawn in by a black hole.
The Reaper beside him gave Song Yao a push. Extremely reluctant, he walked toward the soul, which was still in shock.
"I am very, angry to serve you."
