The Gentle One

1/ On Xin Chu's first day of high school, her deskmate quietly pointed to the boy in the back row and told her,

"Wen Zhiyan is so handsome and gentle. He helped me carry my luggage when I moved in yesterday."

Xin Chu followed her pointing finger.

The boy looked so clean-cut. His gentle, smiling peach-blossom eyes were fixed on the girl in front of him as he explained a problem to her.

Xin Chu didn't think much of it.

Until one day, while cleaning, she walked into the classroom carrying a heavy, soaking-wet mop. Wen Zhiyan had just finished sweeping the floor. He glanced at the mop in her hands. "I'll do it."

2/ Xin Chu fell for his gentleness and kept finding excuses to ask him to tutor her. Wen Zhiyan always put her first, turning down every other girl's request for tutoring.

She thought he would always treat her so well, until he told her they should stop seeing each other.

Xin Chu refused to believe it. "Unless you tell me yourself that you don't like me anymore."

He didn't answer.

Xin Chu: "You can't say it, because you do like me."

Wen Zhiyan looked at her for a moment. "I don't like you anymore, and I don't want us to keep in touch. Is that enough?"

His words were a gentle knife plunged into her heart.

Xin Chu finally gave up.

3/ Six years later, they met again at a dinner gathering. Wen Zhiyan was still as gentle as ever, considerate and attentive.

But for two months straight, he kept waiting for her outside her apartment building.

Xin Chu finally couldn't take it anymore. She stormed downstairs and glared at him. "Do you think no one would want me after all these years? I already have a boyfriend."

He looked at her and said nothing.

Xin Chu just wanted to scare him off with a harsh remark. "Of course, if you want to be my backup, then given our history, I suppose I could consider it."

Wen Zhiyan gently repeated, "Your backup?"

Just as Xin Chu thought he would slam the door, get into his car, and leave, she heard his gentle voice say, "Sure."

That gentle knife of his had wounded not only her, but himself as well.

He was willing to spend his whole life making amends.
