A Cultural Center Secretary's Rise to Success

In 1984, job ads covered the utility poles on the streets of Xicheng.

It was the sixth year of reform and opening up. The outlook was becoming clearer, and many people were eager to try their hand at business.

A coworker at the county cultural center urged Wen Ling, “How about we both quit and go into business together, opening a clothing factory?”

Wen Ling, who was munching on sunflower seeds and sipping tea, suddenly turned stern.

Quit? There was no way she was quitting. Not in this lifetime.

A job in the public sector, with good pay and benefits, easy work, and plenty of time to slack off. Where else could she find a job like that?

Before she transmigrated into a book, she had worked herself to the bone studying for the civil service exam. Wasn’t the whole point to get a comfortable, secure job? She had died of exhaustion while preparing for the exam, and never expected to get her wish as soon as she transmigrated into a book.

Trying to talk her into quitting? No way!

Not even the Jade Emperor himself could make her agree!

Let all those ambitious people ride the wave of the times. She couldn’t do it. She just wanted to lie flat.

While her coworkers each pursued their own plans for advancement, Wen Ling stood firm. Every day, she went on munching sunflower seeds and sipping tea, arriving and leaving work on time, come rain or shine.

Unexpectedly, her boss saw her as steadfast and composed, and promoted her in an unprecedented move.

Wen Ling: ?

Later, as she rose through the ranks and earned one raise after another, working herself into a little biscuit, Wen Ling began to wonder: Wasn’t she supposed to lie flat?

After getting promoted and becoming deputy director, Wen Ling felt her life was complete. All she was missing was a man.

After a long search, she finally spotted a handsome man with a fine figure on the street.

She boldly approached him. “Comrade, are you seeing anyone? What do you think of me?”

The next day, a new director took office.

He glanced lightly at Wen Ling and announced solemnly, “I’m single, and I’m not looking. I plan to focus on my career.”
