Thus, a hereditary female official of the highest rank.

The emperor's boundless favor preserved the Ning family's wealth and glory for generations,

but it also condemned one young woman after another to a life of imprisonment, never to know freedom.

Ning Yan had already accepted her fate.

That was until she discovered the first thing she would have to do after entering the palace

was serve as a female official in the imperial bedchamber.

In that moment, she realized just how hard her life would be.

Her cousin Jiang Jin was kindhearted. She stroked Ning Yan's head with tender sympathy

and said, "I'll secretly find you a good husband, Cousin. Then you can escape the hardship of entering the palace."

Ning Yan believed her, entrusting her entire chastity to Jiang Jin,

not knowing that the men Jiang Jin had conspired with were two or three coarse-faced stable hands.

For a moment, Ning Yan thought her life was over.

But on the night the stable hands entered her room, a thief caused a commotion at the estate.

So she managed to grab a wavering lifeline.

That lifeline was named Shen Bai,

known by the nickname: God of Thieves.
