On the day you were going to confess to the person you'd secretly loved for three years, he suddenly died.
Everyone was sure you'd burst into tears at his funeral, but you didn't even show up, because, he had come back.
He appeared before you once more. He spoke to you and smiled at you, but you couldn't touch him or hold him.
You weren't satisfied, so you sought out a renowned master. He told you this was rare: only people who cared for each other could be drawn together by their lingering attachment, and even then, the chance was one in a million.
So he cared about you, too. You were happy, but the master told you to let him go and allow him to be reincarnated. If a soul remained in the human world too long, it would become a wandering ghost, gradually lose its mind, and drift aimlessly forever.
You loved him. You couldn't be so selfish.
You decided to let him go.
There was only one way to let him go: if you stopped caring about him, he would leave on his own.
So you steeled yourself and pretended you couldn't see him.
He called your name in anguish and wept before you. He tried everything to get your attention, but you ruthlessly ignored him every time, until he shed bloody tears in front of you and vanished, consumed by hatred.
You endured the pain, telling yourself this was for the best. He hated you, but at least he would be reincarnated. Dust to dust, earth to earth.
Life without him seemed no different, yet somehow everything had changed beyond recognition. After a painful struggle, you finally began to move on and embrace a new life.
You moved into a new home, found a new job, and made new friends.
You lay on the soft bed in your new home, feeling sleepy, and closed your eyes.
But you didn't see the thick black fog winding around your body after you fell asleep, the pallid limbs leaving marks on you, or the bloody tears dripping onto your collarbone before being licked away.
He had returned once more, consumed by a boundless hatred for you. He had become a vengeful ghost, determined to drag you into hell.
But you felt uncomfortable, so you rolled over and hugged him, burying your face in the crook of his shoulder.
The blood-covered ghost gradually fell silent. He stared at you with a terrifying gaze, deciding to let you off this time. Next time, you wouldn't escape.
Bonus scene:
When the master heard that he had returned as a vengeful ghost, he rushed to your home. He opened the door gravely, and heard the ghost wail as if spitting blood: You don't love me! You abandoned me!
The master braced himself for battle and pulled out a magical artifact, only to hear your impatient voice: Are you a goldfish? I've told you I love you twenty times today already.
Master: ?
The room gradually came into focus. A slender man sprawled on the sofa, cracking sunflower seeds and watching TV. The shadow wreathed in black fog crawled gloomily across the floor, mopping as it let out miserable doglike howls: I don't believe you! Put it in writing!
