Synopsis

In the third year of Yonghui, as delicate as a flower bud, I was betrothed by imperial decree to Xu Changling, Marquis of Xuanwu, as his secondary wife.

My father was overcome with grief. He tossed me a strip of white silk and cried, "A scholar may be killed, but never humiliated. How could a daughter of the Ruan family become a secondary wife? You mustn't bring shame upon our family. Go on, then!"

Looking at the white silk on the ground, my heart twisted with pain. I wept and said to my father, "The road to the underworld is cold. Why don't you accompany your daughter? If we die together, father and daughter, our noble spirit will make for a fine tale."

Father thought it over, decided I was right, and tearfully agreed.

And so the two of us clung to each other and wept, one calling out "Father" and the other "Daughter." It was truly a moving sight!!!

Theme: No matter how bitter life may be, face it with optimism and courage, and meet every challenge head-on.
