The comic's title was nothing strange. The huge letters "DC" were right there at the top of the cover.

Dick, AKA Robin, caught-between-a-rock-and-a-hard-place Grayson: So am I in a normal universe, or one where a single wrong turn will land me in the Dark Multiverse?

Jason, Weakling-Limited-Edition Todd: This tire... do I steal it or not?

Beneath the same night sky, two different boys found themselves pondering their futures.

Barbara Gordon had always thought her childhood friend was kind of a menace.

Take the boy he'd picked up in Crime Alley, who didn't even look eight or nine. Dick could insist all he wanted that Bruce had chosen him to be his little helper, but anyone with eyes could see what was really going on.

But Barbara never imagined that, in less than a few years at the Wayne household, Jason would also become the kind of guy who didn't hesitate to recruit child labor.

Jason: "Allow me to introduce your new Robin."

Bruce: "..."

Tim: "?"

Roy had always thought his two friends were a little nuts.

When he saw them trying to recruit more and more kids into the Bat-Family as the next little helpers, Roy couldn't hold back his fear any longer. He took Lian's hand, backed away a few steps, and hid behind Donna.

"What are you afraid of?"

"What do you think I'm afraid of?"

Roy clutched Lian's hand. The memory of Dick talking him into becoming Batman's sidekick years ago was still crystal clear.

"So why did you do all this?"

Years later, after Batman had finally shed his reputation as a loner and evolved into a leader who could summon help with a single call, he couldn't help questioning his two eldest children.

Dick and Jason, who was no longer a weakling, looked at each other and gave their father an answer he'd never expected.

"Honestly, we just wanted to retire."
