At last, the gloom in Ji Jiu's heart lifted a little. Even his ever-growing belly didn't seem so bothersome anymore.

Five years later.

As usual, the four-and-a-half-year-old little one was getting ready to take a “house-protecting treasure” bone outside to play. The monsters nearby wouldn't dare come too close with it around.

“Hi-yah! Hi-yah!”

The little one strained with all his might.

...The skeleton lying on the iron bed turned its neck slightly.

“Hi-yah! Hi-yah!”

The bone was hard to break today, so the little one had to swing an iron bar.

The little one met the gaze of those two pitch-black hollows. After a few rapid breaths, he put the bone he'd just knocked off back in place and asked in a trembling voice, “Can I get some tape and stick it back on for you?”

When Ji Jiu returned and opened the front door, he saw the scene before him.

A skeleton sat on a shabby sofa, its leg bones crossed and its wrist bones resting casually on either side.

The little one stood beside the sofa, nervously pounding the skeleton's legs. When he saw Ji Jiu, his lips quivered, and his eyes reddened, but he didn't dare make a sound.

Their eyes met. The skeleton slowly rose, gently gripping Ji Jiu's chin. Its low, dark voice sounded as if it came from hell. “Take care of me until I regain my strength.”

Before Ji Jiu could make a move, the “house-protecting treasure” whispered in his ear again. “You father and son have knocked off 186 of my bones. You'll have to pay for that.”

The spiritual energy between heaven and earth was fading, and the five-year-old little golden dragon Yun Mian was growing weaker by the day. To preserve the golden dragon clan, they had no choice but to arrange an early marriage between him and the twelve-year-old little vermilion bird Qin Tuo.

On their wedding night, candlelight flickered red. Dressed in his wedding robes, Yun Mian pulled out a pile of toys. “Wifey, do you know how to play with grasshoppers? What about stone-people battles? Or Granny Cricket riding a big horse?”

The boy parted his thin lips. “No. Get lost.”

After a sudden upheaval, the two little ones fled to the wilderness. Yun Mian sobbed as he ate the food Qin Tuo had made, then complained through his tears, “Your cooking is awful. How can you take good care of your husband like this?”

Qin Tuo ground his teeth in fury and snapped the chopsticks in his hand.

Yun Mian made a new friend, a little carp spirit. The two hit it off right away and went off hand in hand to play stone-people battles.

“This is my wife...” Yun Mian met Qin Tuo's look, as if he were about to eat a dragon, and hurriedly pulled his tongue back in. “W-wife... Carp Bro and I are discussing something. Stay over there and bring us tea, fan us, and keep us supplied with water.”

Qin Tuo's eyes flashed with menace. He tossed aside the firewood he'd just chopped, rolled up his sleeves, and said, “I'm going to rip out your dragon tendons and peel off your dragon hide right now. Calling me Dad won't help.”

Years later.

“Husband, am I taking good care of you? Are you satisfied? Do you still want to send me away?” Qin Tuo's voice was husky, his breathing unsteady.

Yun Mian had just managed to crawl away when he was dragged back. “...You don't have to take care of me anymore... Sob...”
