Please, You Must Hate Me

This is the hardest book I've ever written. It made me cry several times while I was writing it. Perhaps because it felt so real, I kept thinking of people I know.

To be born human, I am sorry for putting the protagonists through so much suffering.

I can't write a story that's sweet from beginning to end. That's my weakness, and it's also my stubbornness. I tried going with the flow and writing what people wanted, but it took a heavy toll on me. I don't enjoy the rush of pouring out a story through my fingertips. So I've decided to follow my heart, writing about the ordinary warmth of everyday life and the ups and downs of being human.

My stories have never shied away from hardship, and they never will. If a tender light flickers within hardship, then hardship is no abyss; it glows with a damp, moving radiance. Unfortunately, not everyone will encounter that light, even if it's only a fleeting spark.

A story of mutual salvation between a bottom with psychological struggles and a gang leader. In an era when homosexuality was enough to make people recoil, they go from innocence to cautiously testing each other, then face death together, holding fast to each other's hands, and ultimately remain true to each other for life.

Their beginning: When they first meet, Hao Yun says, "Did your moon fall to the ground?"

Their understanding: Wang Ye sees Hao Yun wandering alone through the night and always calls out to him, saying, "Let's walk together!"

Their love: Wang Ye says to Hao Yun, "If either of us ever feels like giving up, can we think of us?"

Hao Yun: "Us?"

Wang Ye: "Us! We're lovers now! Lovers who love each other!"

Some people remain forever trapped in that sweltering summer. They knew each other for half a year and stayed together for sixty years. It's as if they were never together, and yet as if they spent a lifetime by each other's side...

Theme: Clouds can hide the moon, but they can't steal it
