Sacrifice

Sanyue was born in March, so she was named Sanyue.

This March, Sanyue was chosen as a sacrifice to the River God.

The villagers dressed Sanyue in blood-red clothes, tied her hands and feet with red cord, and threw her into the river.

The children watched Sanyue sink from the riverbank and sang the nursery rhyme the adults had taught them:

River God, River God, don't be impatient; lightning and thunder will rebuild your shrine.

River God, River God, don't be angry; good weather and bountiful harvests will raise your golden statue.

River God, River God, don't be cross; with five grains in abundance, you'll marry a bride.
