Don't Mess with the Mute

On her birthday, Ning Guanbai blows out the candles alone, then steps into the thick darkness of the night.

She first meets the little mute on a dark, stormy night. A group of delinquent girls have cornered the girl in an alley and are slapping her. Unable to help herself, Ning Guanbai stops and steps in front of her.

She takes the little mute out to eat, and the girl gives her some change and two hundred-yuan bills.

Ning Guanbai raises an eyebrow. "Protection money?"

The little mute nods. Ning Guanbai takes only twenty yuan.

From then on, the little mute sticks to her every day, following her around and serving her tea and water. When Ning Guanbai learns that the girl is working her way through school, she waves a hand grandly. "Tutor me, and I'll cover all your expenses."

The little mute takes her hand and never wants to let go.

At last, a lamp shines in the pitch-black house, just for her.

Snow falls thickly in the depths of winter. The little mute clutches Ning Guanbai's icy hand and speaks timidly. "Xiaobai is cold. I'll warm Xiaobai up."

Ning Guanbai, who has never heard her speak before, is astonished. "You can talk?"

Lin Nanzhi gathers her courage and kisses her. "I can love you, too."

She is the rare ray of light that has shone into Lin Nanzhi's bleak life. Once you've seen the light, how could you ever be willing to fall into the abyss again?
