Liang Qiyue was sent to the Su family in the height of late summer. A graceful melody drifted from a garden villa shaded by plane trees.
The doorbell startled the music from the piano.
She looked up in a daze and glimpsed, through the slowly opening door, a young man standing in the center of the living room, dressed in white and radiating the clear, cool light of the full moon.
Her uncle said she should call him Older Brother.
The word "Brother" had barely turned on the tip of her tongue when a white cat suddenly darted out and interrupted her. The girl and the cat stared at each other, both bristling in alarm.
The young man lowered his long lashes and said nothing. He picked up the frightened cat and went upstairs.

Many years later, Liang Qiyue heard that familiar melody again on a foreign street. A thin gauze curtain partly screened the afternoon sunlight.
She lounged against a fabric sofa, crushing a strawberry lollipop between her teeth. Her pale, slender legs rested atop his smoke-gray trousers. Her gaze slowly traveled up the creases as she asked, "Older Brother, what piece is this?"
Su Zhengchen turned a page of his documents and warned her coolly, "Put your legs down."
The piano music abruptly stopped again, and the windowsill shook violently.
Su Zhengchen instinctively turned over to shield her. His heartbeat fell into chaos along with the world around them.
He did not know whether it was fear of death, or because the younger sister in his arms had kissed him as if there were no turning back.
As he closed his eyes and accepted it, he did not dare think about the future.

Years passed after they parted. Liang Qiyue, who had been drifting alone far from home, returned to China. Only her grandmother remained in the old villa.
She heard her grandmother sigh as she chatted with a neighbor: "She was so affectionate with her older brother as a child, and even insisted they sleep together. Now that she's grown up, they're so distant."
Her grandmother did not know that the two of them had actually slept in the same bed last night.
She knew even less that the cramped attic had once been filled with the pounding of her and her older brother's hearts.
