A genuinely spoiled, energetic, outspoken heroine vs. a falsely proper, secretly lovestruck hero
Recently, two major events took place in the capital.
The first was the marriage of Ruan Tao, the Chancellor's only daughter, to Lu Yanzhi, the Censor-in-Chief's eldest son.
They seemed like a perfect match, but everyone knew the marriage was doomed.
One was infatuated with a young prince and swore she would marry no one else, setting the whole city abuzz with gossip. The other had no interest in romance and had nearly become a monk.
These two had no reason to cross paths at all. They had even fought in public before the wedding, so after they married, they were all but certain to become a bitter couple.
And so it went. On their wedding night, the newlyweds fought so fiercely they wrecked the bridal chamber, then moved into separate quarters.
The second major event came on the day they returned to Ruan Tao's family home. They were attacked, and Ruan Tao fell into the water, nearly losing her life. Only after the imperial physicians gathered to treat her was she brought back from the brink.
When Ruan Tao opened her eyes, her head was aching and she couldn't remember a thing. Looking at the man standing by the window, she thought his blue robe seemed familiar. Clutching her head, she asked, "...Who are you?"
Lu Yanzhi turned around and smiled, raising an eyebrow. "Your beloved husband."
At first, when Lu Yanzhi learned that Ruan Tao had lost her memory, he lied to her simply to get revenge.
He wanted payback for the night she kicked him out of bed, and for the way she had brazenly declared after their marriage that she loved someone else, making him the laughingstock of everyone.
He only meant to tease her for a few days before telling her the truth.
The first time Lu Yanzhi tried to come clean, Ruan Tao had just woken up and was still drowsy. She reached out to him, her voice soft and sweet. "Husband, hold me."
...It didn't seem like the right moment.
A little while later, they both had something they wanted to tell each other.
Lu Yanzhi had just begun to speak when Ruan Tao took his hand and placed it against her heart. Her cheeks flushed, and her long, curled lashes lowered as she shyly whispered, "Husband, you were right. I really do love you."
"Whenever I see you, my heart beats so fast. Listen."
Lu Yanzhi: "..."
He could never bring himself to say it after that.
At first, he only wanted to deceive her for a few days and watch her get angry when she learned the truth.
But he had tasted what it was like to be cherished by her. It haunted his dreams and drew him in, and selfishly, he hoped she would never remember.
