After I Was Revived, My Childhood Friend Became Public Enemy Number One

1. When Wei Ruan died, humanity was in the first year of the apocalypse.

The virus ran rampant, extreme weather struck frequently, and civilization collapsed like a paper wall.

After surviving for a few months with his best buddy, Wei Ruan was infected. His buddy's eyes were bloodshot as he gripped Wei Ruan's hand through his protective suit.

Wei Ruan was terrified, but as soon as he opened his mouth, he said something stupid.

"You look like your wife just died."

"Don't go joining me in the afterlife right after I die."

His buddy bent his arm and changed his grip into an embrace, holding him even tighter.

Wei Ruan was even more alarmed: You'll get infected, idiot!

Worried his buddy would really join him in the afterlife after he died, the first thing Wei Ruan did when he woke up was ask where his buddy was. What he saw left him stunned.

The city of old had become a wasteland. Simple human shelters had been built atop ruined bases, and everything around them was barren.

Wei Ruan: What's going on? Has humanity gone extinct??

Passerby: Humanity isn't extinct, but the world is pretty much destroyed.

Then they filled him in on the survivors' situation. It was now the eleventh year of the apocalypse. On top of the original, primitive Alpha virus, there were now Beta and Gamma viruses, all classified as lethal pathogens. Infection meant certain death.

At the same time, there was a human enemy whose threat level was off the charts.

His crimes included breaking into official laboratories to steal human cryogenic preservation technology, independently developing brain chips, uploading the consciousness of the dying to the cloud in an attempt to create digital people and achieve immortality, sparking frenzied raids in various regions, refusing arrest, and blowing up countless bases, among many other offenses.

This public enemy was classified as an "SSS"-level threat, alongside the three deadly pathogens.

"Qi Chu!"

Wei Ruan: ...

What a coincidence. He had the same name as his buddy.

Even so, Wei Ruan didn't think that public enemy was his buddy.

Come on. Before the college entrance exams, his buddy could still stop to help an old lady cross the street. He was so kind and outstanding he practically sparkled. How could he possibly endanger humanity?

Until Wei Ruan watched a five-story building collapse in an instant right before his eyes.

Passerby: "Take a good look. Is that your buddy?"

Wei Ruan: ...I can't see clearly. Let's get a better look.

Passerby: "He's coming over. Damn, is he looking this way? This is bad. We need to get out of here..."

When they turned around, Wei Ruan had already sprinted off and thrown his arms around that "SSS"-level dangerous person.

What was there to be afraid of? His buddy wouldn't hurt him, would he?

Qi Chu, who had assumed Wei Ruan was scared because he'd been standing there dumbfounded for ages: ...

After ten years apart, Wei Ruan had planned to pour his heart out to his best buddy.

"I kept you (your corpse) by my side all this time. Three days ago, those suicidal, animated things stole you. When I found them, they still dared to lie to my face. Keeping the vitreous body would've been a waste anyway."

His voice was so gentle and cruel it was almost unbearable. But when he looked at Wei Ruan, he showed a restraint that said, "I absolutely mustn't give myself away," and a surging, long-suppressed love.

"So we were only apart for three days."

"..."

Wei Ruan: Suddenly, I'm really panicking.

What am I supposed to do now?
