Nanyin is a little monster living on Mao'er Mountain.
His birth mother, the pipa spirit, spent twenty taels to buy him a job with a secure position. From then on, Nanyin carried a gong and a flag and became a little monster who patrolled the mountain.
Nanyin diligently does his job. All he wants is to save enough money to go home and look after his mother. But fate has other ideas: a bunch of lunatics are constantly trying to ruin his happy life.
The disciples from the immortal sect next door have come down the mountain to gain experience. They have to meet their KPIs to complete their mission.
Nanyin: ? If you have to meet your KPIs, why kill us harmless little monsters?
A certain immortal maiden and a certain immortal venerable from the heavens reincarnated to undergo tribulations, entangled with each other for nine lifetimes. After returning to their posts, the immortal venerable severed his worldly ties. Heartbroken, the immortal maiden descended to the mortal realm and hid on Mao'er Mountain. The immortal venerable regretted it bitterly and came down to pursue her.
"If you don't come out, I'll flatten Mao'er Mountain!"
Nanyin: ?? You're so impressive, so powerful. You fall in love, and I lose my life.
During the war between immortals and demons, the Heavenly Emperor and the Demon Lord fought for seven days and nights over a certain immortal maiden. The Demon Lord threatened to make the sun and moon perish and destroy heaven and earth, making all living beings pay for his love.
Nanyin: ??? What did all living beings do to deserve this treatment?
Nanyin and a little shrimp from the Eastern Sea crouched together, munching on sunflower seeds.
"You ran into lunatics too?"
"The Immortal Venerable Fanyin gouged out our Third Prince's dragon pearl to save his lover. The Dragon King collapsed from a stroke and still hasn't woken up."
Nanyin: "Tsk, tsk, tsk, tsk."
While they were chatting happily, someone grabbed Nanyin by the back of his collar.
He turned around. It was their Mountain King.
"Stupid pipa, we're going home."
Nanyin was very afraid of their cold-faced king. Later, the king said he wanted to marry him.
Nanyin asked tremblingly: My lord, you're not some ancient deity, are you?
The king's face turned livid. "I'm not."
Nanyin asked again: Then you're not descended from some divine clan, are you?
The king's mouth twitched. "I'm not."
Nanyin: Then you...
The king covered Nanyin's chattering mouth. "As long as you like me, I'll always be the king of Mao'er Mountain."
Reading notes:
1. A goofy, snarky office-worker mountain patrol monster x a cool, quiet, scheming Mountain King. Happy ending, one-on-one romance.
