I Am the Empress's Locust Tree

I don't remember when it happened. One day, I opened my eyes and found that I had become a locust tree with no memories. The palace maids and eunuchs said I was an ancient tree blessed by Heaven, born in the empress's palace, and a symbol of immense wealth and fortune.

But the empress they spoke of would often come and hang a long strip of silk from one of my branches. I was so frightened that my leaves turned yellow for quite some time. Fortunately, the empress never did anything irreversible. The silk was tied up, then loosened, and I, the tree, heard many of her innermost thoughts.

So that night, I learned that the person the empress loved was someone else, and that person was a woman.

From that day on, I could see the lifespan above everyone's head. If the red bar was long, there was no need to worry about calamity; if it was short, their time was probably almost up. Everyone had a fixed lifespan, except the empress. Sometimes hers was frighteningly short, and sometimes it was perfectly normal.

Only when all my memories returned did I understand that everything had been decreed by Heaven. Heaven could not bear to sever the red thread between us.

And yet all that remained was a page full of absurdity in a storybook.

I became bones and yellow earth on the battlefield; she died in the depths of the palace and passed into the underworld.
