That Childhood Friend Is Mine

[Childhood Friends to Lovers]

1.

After the college entrance exams, a reporter from the Jiangcheng Youth Newspaper interviewed the top students in the humanities and sciences. When the interview was over, the reporter wanted to take a photo of them.

After several adjustments, the two, who had originally been sitting a meter apart, ended up closer and closer together.

Ji Shimiao suddenly leaned toward Chen Muye and whispered, "Hey, Chen Muye, don't we look like we're taking wedding photos?"

Chen Muye: "..."

2.

One day, Ji Shimiao read a short passage from Cao Zhi's "Ode to the Goddess of the Luo River," then asked Chen Muye with a straight face, "Do you think Mr. Cao Zhi ever saw me? Aren't these lines of poetry describing me?"

"..." Chen Muye didn't even raise his eyes. "Have some shame. Cao Zhi was writing about Zhen Mi."

Later, at a school arts festival one year, Chen Muye watched Ji Shimiao play Zhen Mi onstage and thought: Forget shame. Zhen Mi is mine.

3.

In their second year of college, Chen Muye's younger brother, who had just started his senior year of high school, secretly took him to see a note on a hidden wishing wall at school: My big goal in life: win over Chen Muye and make him my devoted admirer. If I can't achieve the big goal, then I'll settle for the small one: kiss Chen Muye once. Ahhh, once isn't enough. Make that twice!

Chen Muye, who knew that person's handwriting by heart, gave a cold smile.

One day, Chen Muye asked Ji Shimiao, "Do you have any goals in life?"

Ji Shimiao wore a look of great moral purpose. "Big goal: fight tirelessly for justice for humanity. Small goal: get into the procuratorate."

Chen Muye stared at her for a long while, then said meaningfully, "Well, try a little harder and you might achieve that small goal."
