Begging for a Blessing refers to the act of an animal that has cultivated to a certain level, refined the transverse bone in its mouth, and reached the threshold of transforming into human form. It asks a person a question in the hope of gaining the opportunity to take human form.
If it receives an affirmative answer, the beast's power will greatly increase, allowing it to transform into a human. If not, its power will wane, and it will have to wait several sixty-year cycles before getting another chance to ask for a blessing.
However, for the human being asked, this is really no good thing.
Answering no can earn the grudge of a vengeful spirit and bring bad luck. Answering yes binds one's own fortune to the other party's, entangling one in countless karmic debts and consequences.
It was the middle of the month, and a blood moon hung in the sky.
In the brightly lit CBD, Kui Shouxin, a minor paranormal livestreamer, declared that he had encountered a genuine supernatural incident:
A weasel standing upright on two legs was blocking his way.
Though they were in the middle of a busy pedestrian street downtown, passersby paid no attention to the bizarre scene.
It seemed that Kui Shouxin was the only one who could see it.
"Young man, do I look human to you?" The weasel bowed to Kui Shouxin and spoke. Its voice was surprisingly deep and resonant.
"S... Sorry, I cannot speak Chinese." Under the weasel's expectant gaze, Kui Shouxin gripped his cup of milk tea.
For a moment, all was silent.
The man and the weasel stared at each other, eye to eye, speechless.
"Do you expect me to believe that?" The weasel looked at Kui Shouxin with an exasperated expression.
After a long silence, with the time for asking for a blessing nearly up, the weasel finally leaped three feet into the air in fury.
"...Quit messing around and answer me! Does your grandpa look human or not?!"
Realizing he couldn't avoid this after all, Kui Shouxin took a deep breath and hesitated for a moment before speaking:
"Ahem! I think you look like..."
Six months later, a handsome blond man straightened Kui Shouxin's navy uniform collar and carefully pinned on his epaulets.
"They say the Six Fan Gate is a fine place to cultivate. Keep your eyes peeled!" The handsome man patted Kui Shouxin on the shoulder, his fluffy tail swishing behind him. "You're under my protection, Huang Feibai's, so don't embarrass me!"
Kui Shouxin settled into a fulfilling life of reading case files behind his desk by day and going out to investigate cases at night.
A nine-to-five job, with occasional overtime in the field. His once carefree days were gone for good.
The sign on his desk, reading "Special Consultant, Ganquan Road Police Station," gleamed brightly. The wall beside it was covered with red-and-gold commendation banners.
But Kui Shouxin, looking utterly miserable after spending yet another few nights working to solve a case, couldn't help regretting his decision:
If only he'd known, he wouldn't have said that the yellow weasel looked like a successor to communism...
