Xi Yan transmigrated into a novel as a lovesick Guide. The Guide came from an excellent family, was stunningly handsome, and belonged to a newly risen noble house in the Empire. He had the full package.
But the Guide was only the third male lead.
In the novel, one of the protagonists was the person he was hopelessly in love with. That person also came from an excellent family, was stunningly handsome, and belonged to an old noble house that had endured for generations in the Empire. The full package, too.
The protagonists were a perfect match. Xi Yan was just a backdrop to their romance, a catalyst for their feelings.
In the end, the protagonists overcame every hardship and found happiness together, while the lovesick third male lead, Xi Yan, left and was never heard from again.
Xi Yan: Since I'm going to leave in the end anyway, this time I'll be the one to let go first.jpg
In the original story, his family had arranged everything for his advancement. All he had to do was set off, and a bright future would be his. But because he was infatuated with the person he loved, he stayed in the Imperial Capital and wasted his time. So Xi Yan promptly packed his bags and waited for his family to give the word. He'd get away from the plot, and a brilliant future would be within reach.
But on the very first day at his destination, Xi Yan met the other protagonist from the story: a Guide cloaked in melancholy, the future star of the Empire, who was currently on the frontier, completely lost in grief over a shattered romance.
Xi Yan, who loved spouting nonsense more than anything, told him, "He didn't abandon you. He just died."
The protagonist was shocked. The protagonist was devastated. The protagonist decided to renounce love and devote himself to his career.
Having successfully gotten away from the protagonist, Xi Yan set his sights on a vicious dog that fit his aesthetic perfectly. Its coat was glossy and smooth, though every time they met it bared its teeth at him. Xi Yan firmly believed there was no dog that couldn't be trained. He showed up every day, determined to win the vicious dog's heart.
But one day, the Sentinel named Cang Wu finally glared at him with open hostility.
"Hey! Stay away from my spirit companion!"
Xi Yan still firmly believed there was no dog that couldn't be trained, but... who could have known this thing wasn't a dog at all?
In the end, the vicious dog rolled over and showed him its soft belly. The first male lead thanked him for bringing him and his partner together, the second male lead considered him a mentor in life, and on the day he returned, the people of the entire Empire cheered and celebrated his brave and selfless sacrifice. The streets were packed.
Xi Yan: ? I'm just a lazy salted fish who likes watching the drama unfold.
