Ulysses has a secret: he knows what the future holds for him.
He knows that as a child, he'll be abandoned and suffer terribly. When he's finally found and brought back, he'll be deceived into mistaking a villain for his father, ultimately causing the deaths of everyone close to him. He'll be imprisoned for life, the country will fall into turmoil, the Empire's power will pass into other hands, and within a few years it will be overthrown again and torn apart.
But the problem is that by the time he learns his fate, he's already been framed and dumped on a lawless border, where he's on the verge of being taken away as a laborer.
Worse still, in the original course of events, the smuggling ship that should have taken him all the way to the border ran into the villainous mastermind who would eventually overthrow the Empire.
"Please let me join you. I'll do anything!" Ulysses faced the villains before him with three parts grit, three parts pleading, three parts determination, one part fear, and a face on which he'd managed to squeeze out two tears.

Aquila is a famous interstellar pirate crew, full of talented people. To survive, Ulysses decides to cast his net wide and latch onto as many powerful backers as he can.
The captain was once a celebrated general of the Empire, but was betrayed and exiled into space.
The vice-captain is arrogant and proud, but was framed and sent to prison by his former fiance.
The ship's doctor is cold and withdrawn, with exceptional spiritual aptitude that's been badly damaged by an old injury.
Whether they're the imposing captain, the brooding vice-captain, the withdrawn doctor, or his colleagues with their various problems, Ulysses is willing to be a benevolent mentor to them all.
At first, the pirates look down on this frail little bug and leave him to fend for himself.
Later, the captain, who'd been betrayed, swears allegiance to him; the proud vice-captain is willing to become the sword in his hand; the cold doctor vows to heal him; and his colleagues raise their arms together, ready to overthrow the Empire.
"So, are we definitely overthrowing the Empire?"
Ulysses only wants a peaceful life, but his colleagues don't seem to feel the same way.
