Making a Fortune by Foraging at the Seaside in Ancient Times

After drowning, Lin Wen, an experienced scuba diver, was reborn in utero as a fisherman's daughter, bringing along her diving suit.

The island was remote, but the sea was full of bounty. Swimming crabs crawled through the crevices in the shore's rocks, plump shrimp hid beneath the shallow mudflats, and deeper waters held beds of abalone, fields of sea cucumbers, and pearl oyster farms, all in places beyond anyone else's reach.

Lin Wen went out to gather seafood before dawn every day. She picked up a few snails and crabs, boiled some shrimp, and sold them at the market for a few copper coins, enough to support herself.

She married Zhang Yulin, a fisherman from her village who was said to have once been a noble before his family fell into ruin. After their wedding night, he joined the army, leaving behind two young siblings. Lin Wen took the two children in hand and kept gathering seafood, running her stall, and doing business.

When war came, everyone else fled, but Lin Wen used her diving suit to hide the whole village's grain in a sea cave. After the smoke of war cleared, she paid to pave the stone road by the sea, built the pier, and became the source of seafood from her workshops that fed half the town.

And so Lin Wen carved out a life for herself on the island.
