[Chen Jingming is the female general who appears in Chapter 1 of I Was Born to Be an Emperor]

Chen Jingming killed her husband and her son, and never regretted it.

She once had carefree days as a young woman, riding horses beyond the frontier with her companions and singing to the heavens.

A young man risked his life and broke into the imperial city to save someone, then entrusted his life to her and took on the charge of treason.

Later, they stood with swords drawn, staring at each other in silence. Blood spilled across Lion Slope, and death kept them apart.

Chen Jingming often wondered afterward at what point things had begun to slip beyond her control. Perhaps she should not have defied her father. Perhaps she should not have gone to the capital. Or perhaps... But the world has never let people choose their own way. The choices we make in the moment are the only choices we can make then.

The love was real, the tears were real, and the blood was real, too.

Liu Guo of the Song dynasty wrote: "At the broken shoals of Yellow Crane, has my old friend ever been here? The old lands are all steeped in new sorrow. I would buy osmanthus wine and share a ride, but in the end, it is nothing like our youthful wanderings." These lines are a true portrait of youth and the changes wrought by time.
