One day, when I was thirty, nothing particularly special happened.
As I passed a flower shop, I thought the irises were blooming so beautifully that I picked a few and made them into a bouquet to take home. I passed a bakery and bought the strawberry cake my wife and daughter loved most. As I stepped into the elevator, I suddenly remembered that Chen Yin's favorite cherries were in season, so I went back to the fruit shop.
I pushed open the door, out of breath, and asked Chen Yin with a smile, "Guess how many surprises there are today."
"Three." Chen Yin smiled back at me, like a lotus that could never be defeated.
She knew me too well and guessed right away. But I didn't want her to get too smug, so I told her, "Wrong. There are actually four."
