The Butterfly Duke

Four major events took place in the Roland Empire during the spring.

The first: In his fortieth year, Duke Ind Garcia, the empire's most powerful noble, became obsessed with marrying a woman twenty-two years his junior, a woman from the slums.

The affair caused a huge uproar and became known throughout the empire, but ultimately fell through after the Church intervened.

Though he couldn't marry her, Duke Ind Garcia brought the young lover into his residence. Whenever she appeared, he had all the servants call her "Madame Butterfly."

The second: Less than two months later, Duke Ind Garcia died of cardiac arrest after excessive pleasure in bed.

The third: After Ind Garcia's death, it came to light that neither he nor his children were descendants of the Garcia family. They were illegitimate children born from an affair between the previous duchess and a musician.

The fourth: The true blood heir of the Garcia family was the young lover born in the slums.

And so, beneath the royal family's watchful eyes and the people's gaze, she was crowned the new duke. History would remember her as the "Butterfly Duke."

Eli An discovered that, despite spending his whole life searching, he could never find another woman like Beverly.

She was utterly base, yet peerlessly noble.

Her hair was the dark red of a wildfire just before it burns to ash, and her smoky gray eyes glimmered with a craving for power and desire.

She poisoned his father, then tore up by the roots all the schemes his father had laid within the Garcia family over the years.

She smiled at him, then turned around and drove him out into the mud.

An insurmountable hatred lay between them.

Yet in a certain moment, he wanted to kneel beneath her throne and plead softly, "I beg you for your mercy."
